The first edition, first printing of this popular work by Bernard Russell which sets out to explain the nature of philosophical inquiry.

Divided into four parts, the work proceeds on the premise that the function of philosophy is to acquire 'real knowledge'. The first deals with individual human sensory experience, 'man from without', turning next to 'the physical world', before examining 'man from within' and the wider 'universe'.

First edition, first printing; 8vo (22.5 x 15.5 cm); ownership inscription in pen to front free endpaper recto, blindstamp to title-page, minor spotting; publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, some light spotting to boards, lacking dust jacket; vi, 317, [3]pp.
