This guide was edited by David Thomas Ansted, a professor of geology. Adam and Charles Black started publishing guide books in 1839 and they were designed to be more concise and easier to read at a glance than their competitors.

Fourth edition. 8vo ( 17 x 12 cm), viii, 190, 64 pp adverts at rear, a few illustrations in text, a double page of map, previous owner's signature and date in ink on front free endpaper, one page lacks a cm at the top (no loss of text), inner hinges slightly loose; overall publisher's green cloth gilt, slightly worn in parts; overall a very good copy.
