Bradshaw's Continental Railway, Steam Transit, and general guide

This comprehensive guide covers France, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Switzerland and also includes Serbia and Montenegro, The Levant and Jerusalem.

George Bradshaw, (1801 – 1853), whose name was to become synonymous with railway timetables, published his first guide in 1830 with the opening of the Liverpool-Manchester Line and his first timetable in 1839. He was originally a cartographer and printer but in the 1830s with the start of railway travel he developed the now famous timetables and guides. He was also a religious man and it is his belief as a Quaker that is quoted as causing the early editions of Bradshaw's guides to have avoided using the names of months based upon Roman deities which was seen as "pagan" usage. His publications are seen as the standard manual for rail travel right up until the last issue in May 1961. This guide is an excellent example of a detailed and comprehensive Bradshaw. This guide does lack the separate booklet of town plans but is still a desirable item
