Spain, Produced for the use of the Ordo Cartusiensis, 1601.
This two volume set, dated within from 1601, was produced for the use of the Ordo Cartusiensis of Spain, possibly originating from the Cartoixa d'Escaladei monastery.
Compared to other monastic orders in 17th century Spain, Carthusian convents and monasteries were few and far between - making Spanish Carthusian antiphonals exceptionally rare.
Featuring decorated margins with floral patterns, these manuscripts also feature enlarged initials ornamented with handsome pen work. Alongside this, both volumes contain remarkably detailed title pages. At the end of each volume reads the manuscript note 'Correctum', indicating that each work had been checked for errors and corrected by a fellow scribe.
Two volumes dated from 1601; folio (50 x 35 cm); parchment, characteristic yellowing on hair side, some tears and loss to corners and slight fading on lettering, historiated initials with later 19th century decoration in blue ink, rubric in blue and red, decorated prefatory pages; original blind panelled calf with raised bands, brass corner pieces and embossed centre pieces, clasps present in first volume with remains of clasps on second volume, fore-edge leather bookmarks, one volume containing interior cloth registers, edges stained red; very good.
