A handsome copy of Woodham-Smith's account of the life of Florence Nightingale. The prominent social reformer used her experience of working as a nurse in the Crimean War to advocate for better hospital sanitation.

First edition; 8vo (21.5 x 14.5 cm); frontispiece with tissue paper overlay, three further illustrations, slight spotting to illustration pages and faint offsetting to page opposite, age toning to tissue paper overlays with faint spotting to opposite page, light offsetting from newspaper clipping to half-title, small mark to final illustration, not affecting image, small mark to pp588-9, occasional small spot or mark throughout, otherwise very good internal condition; modern half navy morocco over blue cloth boards by Bayntun Riviere, spine in 6 compartments and lettered in gilt, cockerel endpapers, top edge gilt, some signs of wear to extremities and slight fading to spine, otherwise good condition; [viii], 615pp, [1]pp.
