DARWIN, Charles.
The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection,
The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection,
or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life. (Forty-ninth thousand.)
Stock Code 120009
London, John Murray, 1897.
The sixth edition of On the Origin of Species was the first in which the word evolution occurs (following its use in The Descent of Man in 1871) and the final edition of Darwin's lifetime. As with previous editions, it was extensively revised by the author and a new chapter was added to refute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St. George Mivart. Other changes were made to increase its appeal to the general public, including shortening the title by removing 'On' and the use of smaller type to reduce the volume's size.
Sixth edition; 8vo; folding chart, contents slightly toned with occasional small marks and spots, endpapers partially tanned; original green cloth blocked in blind, titles to spine gilt, patterned endpapers, cloth rubbed with some wear at the corners and spine ends and a few small marks on the upper board, a very good copy; 432pp.
Freeman, The Works of Charles Darwin 392.
