The first edition in English of the memoir of the military commander Charles V, Duke of Lorraine and Bar (1643-1690), a solider in the service of the Habsburg Empire who led the imperial forces in the Great Turkish War and broke the siege of Vienna in September 1683.

The text consists of a series of short essays on topics including the qualities required of different types of military officers from Quarter-Master to a General of the Artillery, military discipline, what constitutes a 'just offensive war', alliances, truces, appended with his observations on the strength and power of Germany as it stood at the time.

According to the dedicatory epistle, the work is published for the first time from the 'Papers of Charles the V. late Duke of Lorraine'. Little is known of the translator, Rupert Beck, whose name does not appear otherwise in the English Short Title Catalogue. The text was reprinted only once in a scarce edition of 1701.

From the library the Whig politician John Wallop (1690-1762), who was elevated to the peerage as Baron Wallop and Viscount Lymington in 1720, and later made Earl of Portsmouth in 1743.

First edition in English; 8vo (19.5 x 12.5 cm); engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved bookplate to front pastedown, slightly toned; contemporary mottled calf, covers ruled in blind, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece to spine, a little rubbed, very good; [16], 277, [9]pp.
