Charles Edward Mathews was president of the Alpine Club. The author (1834-1905) had climbed the mountain himself a dozen times from 1856-1898 and he covers the history of climbing this peak from the late 1700s up to the late nineteenth century. This title also contains a chapter on the geology of Mont Blanc written by Professor T.G.Bonney.

First American edition. 8vo, photographic frontispiece, numerous photographic illustrations, folded map at rear, bookplates, black ink markings on endpapers, pages uncut, some slight staining on a few plates; publisher's original black cloth gilt, slightly worn along edges; overall a very good copy. xxiv, 367pp
