A handsome set of this interesting work on the crusades. Charles Mills (1788-1826) casts the Christian crusades as brutal and largely un-Christian, a relatively new but quickly mainstream analysis. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), who he was acquainted with, would go further and describe the Crusades as an act of arrogance by coarse and uneducated Europeans against a culturally and intellectually superior civilisation, a view which is largely held today. Mills was posthumously knighted for this work.

Third edition; 2 vols; 8vo (21.5 x 14 cm); engraved frontispiece, folding map of the Holy Land, bookplate to front pastedown of each vol., some spotting; contemporary diced red calf, rebacked, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces, marbled edges, a little rubbed, very good; xv, [1], 479, [1]; viii, 434pp.
