Cotes was the first Plumian Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge and a close friend of Sir Isaac Newton's who proofread the second edition of the Principia. Newton famously said after his early death in 1933, 'If he had lived, we might have known something.'

Second edition; 8vo (21 x 14 cm); five engraved folding plates to rear, terminal advertisement leaf, p. 289 misprinted as 273, bookplate to front pastedown; contemporary full sprinkled calf, spine rubbed with slight to head, boards ruled in gilt, edges sprinkled red, a very good copy.
