The less well known account of William Baikie's (1825-1864) expedition up the Niger in 1854 on the steamship Pleiad sponsored by Macgregor Laird (1808-1861).

Samuel Ajayi Crowther (1808-1891) was a Yoruba Christian missionary who became the first African Anglican bishop of West Africa. He accompanied several expeditions along the Niger, including the one described in the present work, and was one of the founding pioneers of Christian missions in Nigeria.
