Handbook of American Travel. Western Tour; Northern and Eastern Tours.

The Western tour covers The Great Lakes, The Rocky mountains, Utah, Colorado and California amongst others. The Northern volume covers New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. These handbooks were first published in the 1850's and were originally published as railway guides. They contain very detailed colourful maps of cities and travel routes. There is a third volume in the series on the Southern Tour which covers Virginia, South Carolina and Maryland amongst others. All volumes are relatively scarce.

2 vols. 8vo ( 20 x 13 cm); 13 maps and plans, some coloured and folding, (a couple of maps with tears but no loss of image), adverts, previous owner's signature on endpapers, some pages browned; restored preserving most of the publisher's original red cloth, gilt lettered, some wear to the extremities, some fading and staining; overall a good solid copies; x, 317, x, 297 pp.
