The translator Henry Francis Cary (1772-1844) began working on the poem in 1797. He completed his translation of the Inferno in 1805, publishing this separately with parallel text in the original Italian the same year. The full translation was not completed until 1812, and not published until 1814 when it appeared in a small sextodecimo format that was almost illegible.

I, slightly toned; contemporary half brown calf, marbled paper covers ruled in gilt, contrasting black morocco lettering-pieces to spines, top-edges gilt, a little rubbed with occasional minor loss, very good; [10], li, [1], 280; iii-xi, [1], 286; [4], 271, [29]pp.
