The first edition in English of Erasmus' (c.1466-1536) Colloquies, complete in contemporary blind-panelled calf and with the engraved portrait frontispiece.

The Colloquies contain a collection of excerpts drawn from a range of classical authors and were originally intended as a teaching-aid to help students learn Latin.

He served in a number of ministerial posts, including stints as Secretary of State for India, Lord Privy Seal, Secretary of State for War and Ambassador to France.
