A smart prize binding copy of this sweeping work covering the history of Egypt and British involvement from 1876 to 1907, written by one of the key British protagonists. Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer (1841-1917) was the consul-general in Egypt from 1883 to 1907 during the British occupation, prompted by the Urabi revolt. Baring's position gave him, and by extension Britain, de facto control over Egypt's finances and precipitated the colonisation of Egypt which lasted until 1952.

New edition; 8vo (22 x 14.5 cm); photogravure portrait frontispiece, folding three-tone map, prize bookplate to pastedown, internally fine; contemporary full red calf prize binding by Bickers & Son (discreet bookbinders stamp), gilt fillets and armorial motifs to boards, spine lettered in gilt in six gilt compartments, gilt marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, inner hinges cracked but firm, small split to upper joint, a touch of minor rubbing, otherwise a very good copy; xxiv, 931pp.
