London, Bentley, 1866.
Known both as a poet and a novelist, Eden (1797-1869) went out to India with her sister Fanny whilst their brother George, 1st Earl of Auckland held the post of Governor-General (1835-1842). She not only provided descriptions of her travels, peppered with details of local colour, but also left a perceptive account of the major political events during the period of her brother's term of office, including the disastrous retreat from Kabul in 1842, the blame for which was partly laid at her brother's door.
Eden includes considerable descriptions of Sikh envoys as well as her journey to the Punjab in which she met Ranjit Singh and his sons Kharak Singh and Sher Singh in Lahore.
