onlaid red morocco by Riviere & Son
A delightful copy of The Rubàiyàt of Omar Khayyàm, bound in crushed red morocco gilt onlaid in blue to a paisley design. This edition is a reprint of the Arabist Edward Fitzgerald's translation, which was first published in 1859. The poem presents an interesting challenge to any reader trying to sort through its profound symbolism and not-so-obvious theme, and gained recognition over the course of the nineteenth century as a growing 'cult of the Rubáiyát' found expression in 'the Omar Khayyám Clubs of England and America' (Yohannan, p. 202).
8vo (20.5 x 15 cm); gift inscription in pen to front free endpaper, occasional light spotting; crushed red morocco by Riviere & Son for the Army & Navy, upper cover with onlaid paisley design in blue morocco gilt, gilt spine, top-edge gilt, spine slightly faded, minor wear; [4], 290pp.
