This title chronicles Whymper's many attempts to climb the Matterhorn over a period of years. It was originally published as Scrambles in the Alps but then in 1880 it was abridged and re-issued under the above title. The story of the first ascent, and the seven preceding, beginning in 1861, forever fixed the Matterhorn as the mountain which most deeply stirred the imagination of mountaineers' (UCLA Farquahar Collection).First edition; 8vo (23 x 17 cms), engraved frontispiece, 2 folding maps at rear, numerous black and white illustrations throughout, some browning of a few pages throughout, some newspaper cuttings; publisher's blue cloth, gilt decorated with a picture of the Matterhorn on upper cover; a very good copy; xxii, 325 pp.
