Edwards first visited Egypt in the early 1870s. She intrepidly journeyed down the Nile travelling in a 'dahabiah' (an Egyptian sailing boat) and 'carefully recorded all she saw of the temples, graves and monuments' which she later published in this book in 1877 (Robinson). It was the first general archaeological survey of Egypt's ruins and also one of the most inspiring travel books.

Second edition, revised by the author; 8vo (23 x 17 cms); 81 engraved illustrations including frontispiece and title vignette, armorial bookplate to pastedown, gift inscription to title; publisher's original gilt pictorial cloth, all edges gilt, inner hinges cracked, else a fine copy; xxvii, 499 pp.

Robinson p.14.
