A lively account of a journey to Panama, Haiti, Granada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts, and Trinidad. Robert Elwes (1819-1878) was as noted for his art and lithographs as he was for his writing, including the lithographs within this work, and his descriptions of the Americas provide a distinct but enjoyable contrast to those of Charles Darwin who had made his trip in the Beagle only 15 years prior.

First edition; 8vo (22.5 x 15.5 cm); 14 tinted lithographs including frontispiece; publisher's original purple cloth, gilt lettering to upper board and spine, a little sunfaded, a near-fine copy; iv, [ii], 135 pp.

Howgego I, E11; Sabin, 22372.
