[BRONTË, Emily & Anne] BELL, Ellis & Acton (pseuds.).
Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey.
Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey.
a new edition revised, with a biographical notice of the authors, a selection from their literary remains and a preface, by Currer Bell.
Stock Code 116508
London, Smith, Elder and Co., 1850.
'We did not like to declare ourselves women, because we had a vague impression that authoresses are liable to be looked on with prejudice.'
The first state of the second edition ('Uniform' edition), can be identified by the publication date '1850' on the title-page. After printing this title-page, the publisher's probably decided to change the year to 1851 because of the late date of publication (December 1850).' Smith p. 68.The purpose of the biographical notice, included in this edition, was to reveal the true identities of the Brontë sisters.
'Uniform edition' (ie the second, first state); small 8vo (170 x 125mm); title and section-titles, also including poems by Emily Brontë to rear, erased name and previous owners names in ink to upper free endpaper, professional corner repair and and closed tear to p. 317, random spotting, otherwise good; later binding, plain blue beaded cloth, blind-stamped to borders, lettering in gilt to spine, shelf-wear to extremities, more notable to spine ends, small stain to upper board, minor split at hinge pp 318-319, otherwise binding is firm, overall very good especially due to scarcity of early editions.
