The book-form edition of J.A. Froude's (1818-1894) controversial lectures on the life and correspondence of the Dutch humanist theologian Desiderius Erasmus, delivered following his appointment as Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford in 1892.

From the library of the Liberal MP Richard Fothergill (1822-1903), with the gift inscription to the title-page noting: '8th Nov. 1891, This gift of my dear son Theodore on his Father's 72nd Birthday'. Fothergill was elected to the House of Commons in 1868 for the constituency of Merthyr Tydfil, following the expansion of the suffrage with the passing of the Second Reform Act the previous year.

'New edition' (i.e. first edition, reprinted the same year); 8vo (8.5 x 13.5 cm); bookplate to front pastedown, gift inscription/note in pencil to title-page, publisher's ads to rear, occasional minor spotting; publisher's purple cloth, blind-tooled centrepiece to covers, spine lettered in gilt, faded, small split to upper joint, a little rubbed, very good; vi, 452, [4 ads], 24[ads]pp.
