Paris, Badouin, An 9 [1801].
Descriptive geometry is the science of presenting a three dimensional object on a two dimensional plane.Monge's methods, which allowed for accurate representation of objects, including shadows and vanishing points, were so revolutionary at the time that they were made military secrets. Using his formulae one could send accurate representations of objects to allies (information on fortifications was particularly useful, as the Napoleonic wars were ongoing).
Monge later led the production of the Description de l'Égypte, and the accuracy of many of the depictions is testimony to his methods. Current applications of his breakthrough are numerous, and include 3D films and architectural modelling.
Second edition; 4to; 3 engraved plates; contemporary half calf, neatly rebacked, very good condition; 142 pp.
