Ada Goodrich-Freer (1857-1931 moved to Jerusalem in 1901 after being exposed as a fake psychic and lived in the region with her husband Dr Hans Henry Spoer for twenty years. She travelled across eastern Arabia and Syria publishing several works on her travels. In this particular work she focusses on the cultural aspects of the people she encountered including whole chapters on children, bread and coffee, the Harem, property laws, camels, locusts, and several on the plants of the area.
