London, For the Author, [1844-]-50.
Gould was inspired to undertake this study by the sight of several living examples of the beautiful Callipepla Californica, brought home and presented to the Zoological Society of London by Captain Beechey in 1830. Gould's research took him to collections in Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Leipzig, Berlin, Hanover, Amsterdam, and Leiden, and he was subsequently able to more than triple the number of recorded species of this genus. The monograph was dedicated to Prince Charles Lucien Bonaparte, whose own most widely known ornithological work concerned the birds of America.
First edition, 3 original fascicules, folio (57 x 39 cm), 32 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates by and after after John Gould and H. C. Richter, prospectus, list of subscribers, list of plates, original cloth-backed printed boards, occasional light spotting, light wear to boards, a very good example.
