Printed by the famous Scottish printing family Morison, with the maps and plates re-engraved for this edition by Daniel Lizars, head of the famous Lizars publisher and engraving family, and with the folding map also shows Cook's discoveries from his second and third voyages. This is the first of this size, both the official third edition and two prior pirated Dublin editions being in larger 8vo.Captain James Cook set out on his first voyage in 1768, returning to England some three years later in 1771, having sailed from Tahiti to Australia and the Great Barrier Reef, and circumnavigating New Zealand. It was this voyage which Britain used to stake claim to, and annex, Australia and New Zealand.
Fourth edition; 4 vols, 12mo (18 x 11 cm); 2 maps, 1 folding, and 9 plates, 2 folding, by D. Lizars, first folding plate with tear to fold repaired, contemporary ownership inscription dated 1791 to front endpapers of each vol. apart from vol. 3 where it is on the reverse of the frontispiece; contemporary full calf, smartly rebacked retaining original gilt red morocco lettering pieces, inner hinges reinforced, endpapers a little soiled, a very good copy; [viii], xxvi, (27)-260; vi, 261; [ii], iv, 241; iv, 245 pp.
