A scarce first edition of Henry Dunning Macleod's History of Economics bound in full red calf for the Bradford Modern School.

This volume is divided into two books, with the first concerning the nature and history of economics, and the second dealing with the fundamental concepts and axioms of the field.

Macleod is most famous for his involvement in the collapse of the Royal British Bank in 1857, where he had been serving as director since his appointment in 1853. This scandal prevented Macleod from acquiring university chairs, despite his repeated attempts. Nonetheless, his works on banking and economics were generally well received.

First edition, 8vo (22 x 14.5 cm); prize bookplate to front pastedown, slight foxing to prelims, otherwise very good internal condition with minimal signs of age; full red calf with double gilt fillet border, Bradford Modern School armorial centrepiece in gilt, blind tooling, spine decorated in gilt in six compartments, raised bands, contrasting black morocco lettering piece, marbled edges and endpapers, partial fraying to joints, some scratches to lower boards and board edges, very good; xv, 690 pp.
