Including the text of Semblance of a Devoted Past.
New York, Grossman Publishers, 1968
The recipient was a Southern California osteopath who owned a second home in Big Sur, where he befriended Henry Miller, Alan Watts, and other writers and artists. Like many great artists, Miller considered himself a painter who also wrote, and this collection of his paintings coupled with his personal reminiscences and explorations of how art has affected his life is a perfect reflection of his creative diversity. Includes the text from the privately printed Semblance of a Devoted Past (1944), which is published for the first time here in an unexpurgated version, and full colour reproductions of 20 of his paintings.
Second revised edition, first printing, inscribed by the author; 4to; colour reproductions of 20 of Miller's paintings, minor toning to margins, else unmarked internally, ALS from Miller laid in; publisher's cream cloth, titles to spine in white and orange, lettering to upper cover in white, orange topstain, pictorial endpapers, slight edge-wear, remnants of small price label to front flap, else very good.
