A fine prize binding copy of the narrative of the Swedish Vega expedition, the first Arctic expedition to navigate through the Northeast Passage, the sea route between Europe and Asia through the Arctic Ocean, and the first voyage to circumnavigate Eurasia. Although weighed down by a troubled start to the enterprise, the expedition has come to be considered to one of the most important successes for Swedish science in the nineteenth century.

First English edition; 8vo (22 x 15 cm); 47 engraved illustrations, 3 colour maps, 2 of which folding including frontispiece, prize inscription to first blank, bookplate to front pastedown, some very light spotting to title; full tree calf prize binding, gilt school crest to upper boards, spine in six gilt compartments with gilt morocco lettering piece, all edges gilt, touch of rubbing to extremities, a fine copy; xlviii, 293 pp.
