Scarce firsthand account of the events of the Indian Rebellion in Oudh. Includes important correspondence elucidating on the minds of the British officers as the Rebellion took place.

Captain G. Hutchinson was Military Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, and as such was ideally placed to record the events through genuine sources and correspondence (as he identifies in the title) instead of rumour and hearsay. Oudh had only been annexed by Britain a year prior, and had caused significant discontent among the sepoys who would lose their privileges as landed gentry, in the Oudh courts, and land-revenue payments. This made it one of the centres of discontent and an important focal point of the events of 1857.
