HUTCHINSON, G.
Narrative of the Mutinies in Oude.
Narrative of the Mutinies in Oude.
(Compiled from Authentic Records).
Stock Code 123350
Calcutta, printed by P. M. Cranenburgh, Military Orphan Press, 1859.
Captain G. Hutchinson was Military Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, and as such was ideally placed to record the events through genuine sources and correspondence (as he identifies in the title) instead of rumour and hearsay. Oudh had only been annexed by Britain a year prior, and had caused significant discontent among the sepoys who would lose their privileges as landed gentry, in the Oudh courts, and land-revenue payments. This made it one of the centres of discontent and an important focal point of the events of 1857.
First edition; 8vo (21 x 14 cm); Calcutta printed folding sketch map, map in text, bookplate to pastedown, later ownership notes to front free endpaper; contemporary half calf, marbled boards, all edges speckled red, gilt spine in five compartments with gilt morocco lettering piece, a little rubbed, a very good copy; ii, [ii], 182 pp.
