'This book has more wisdom to the square inch than any work of man' (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)
A complex and extensive guide on running a household in the Victorian period. It was first published in 1861 and was continually updated and sections were added, causing each edition to become longer than the last. It contained chapters on areas such as cooking, cleaning and even law and nursing, allowing Mrs. Beeton to be hailed as the original 'domestic goddess.'
New edition; thick 8vo; 32 plates in colour and nearly 700 illustrations, 14pp. advertisements, including the endpapers, offsetting to advertisement recto of half-title, some occasional spotting throughout, not affecting legibility of text, else very good; quarter red morocco over brown boards, spine blind embossed, red speckled edges, rubbed at extremities, one or two minor marks to morocco, faint spotting to page edges, very good plus; 1680pp
