The first book in the his Duluoz stories. A very personal novel told from the imagined perspective Jack's older brother Gerald, who died from rheumatic fever at the age of nine.

First edition, first printing; 8vo; illustrations by James Spanfeller, unmarked internally; quarter black cloth over pink and white patterned boards, gilt lettering to spine, light tanning to edges, with the unclipped pictorial dust-jacket by Spanfeller, slightly sunned and dust-soiled, spine tanned, slight chipping to spine ends, mild edge-wear, else very good.
