Signed: 'Jane E. Duncan./ Thornfield, Selkirk, when I had the/ pleasure of meeting Mrs. Hogg (?) in/ October, 1906.'Jane Duncan (1848-1909), in the summer of 1904, trekked for eight months from Srinagar to Leh and Ladakh, through to Baltistan, and back down the top of the Indus Valley to Kashmir. She did this without any Western company, attended only by her porters and batman, and only seeing another European when she happened to meet fellow solo woman traveller Ella Christie (1861-1849) during her journey. Her account of this journey is extremely entertaining and detailed, with appreciation for the people and landscape pouring out of the pages.
