Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964) was a central figure in Indian politics and the country's struggle for independence from British rule. He served as the first Prime Minister of India from 1947 until his death in 1964. Born in Allahabad, Nehru was educated at home and later at Trinity College, Cambridge. He joined the Indian National Congress and became a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. Nehru was deeply involved in the non-cooperation movement against British rule and was imprisoned several times during the freedom struggle. As Prime Minister, he promoted a policy of non-alignment, played a key role in establishing the Non-Aligned Movement, and implemented policies aiming at developing a mixed economy. Nehru's tenure was also marked by efforts to establish a secular and democratic republic in India, as well as the initiation of significant social and economic reforms.

India Today and Tomorrow is a collection of essays for the Azad Memorial Lecture Series for the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

First edition, third impression, signed by the author; 8vo; internally clean, solid text block, Jain Book Agency stamp to front free endpaper; publisher's beige cloth, blue lettering to spine, with the original unclipped dust-jacket, light toning to spine, housed in custom brown leather clamshell box; a very good copy.
