The first edition of this reply to the pseudonymously published collection of essays, Cato's Letters, which caused a stir in 1720 to 1723 for advocating an extreme form of libertarianism — Cato (954-64 BC) being the stalwart adversary of Julius Caesar and champion of Rome's republican lineage.

The author, John Jackson (1686-1763), was a low-church religious controversialist who wrote against orthodox notions of the Trinity.

First edition; 8vo (21.5 x 13.5 cm); woodcut initials, head and tailpieces, vignette to head of B1, bookplate to front pastedown, light spotting to title and endpapers; contemporary calf-backed marbled paper boards, MS title in pen to upper covers, uncut edges, rubbed with slight loss to spine ends and corners, endpapers split at gutter margins, overall a very good example; [8], 207, [1]pp.
