The Fish Account.
Manuscript account book of a coarse fish breeder.
Stock Code 109129
Surrey, 1742-1827.
early record of fish husbandry
A fascinating record of fish farming in Georgian England. The account book opens in 1749 with the sale of '100 store carp at 4 s[hillings] p[er] hundred' to Mr Coleman, and logs the prices, breeding notes, and farmed varieties available — invariably common carp and tench, both of which were considered as much a food source as a coarse fish at the time.
To the rear, the manuscript contains a collection of notes on Yalden's daily activities: '9th April 1762. Stocked the great pond with 400 carp & 240 tench, the carp was from 6 to 8 inches... the tench from 6 to nine inches — sometime before I put in 500 perch about 6 inches'. With a later partial OS map showing the location of the ponds near Godalming, Surrey in 1874-1880.
Manuscript account book; small 4to (21 x 16.5 cm); 55pp. in a clear, easily in legible hand, dated ownership inscription to front free endpaper recto; in contemporary vellum, MS title to upper cover, sprinkled edges, some minor wear to extremities; with later partial OS map showing the location of the ponds in 1874-1880, dissected and laid onto linen, 165 x 102 cm.
