first issue of a rare Baedeker
"Schweiz" was almost the longest series in German with thirty-nine editions from 1844 to 1937. The early editions included a coloured frontispiece with the coats of arms of the various Swiss Canton. The plans include Basel, Zurich, and Bern. This copy is the first of two issues of the fifth edition. The second issue was published a year later in 1854. Both are scarce.Fifth edition. xl, 374pp, coloured frontispiece, 6 maps and plans, a folding coloured panorama, 16 engraved views, stamp on title-page; publisher's old type red cloth gilt; an excellent copy.
