rare
First edition of one of the rarest and most beautifully illustrated botanical works. Only two sets have appeared at auction since 1980.The French botanist Claude Thomas Alexis Jordan (1814-1897) travelled through much of France between 1836 and 1877, collecting one of the largest herbariums of the period. He established a large botanical garden in Lyon, where over 10,000 different varieties were cultivated (Natural History Museum, Global Plants Database, Jstor). The present work, considered his masterpiece, was disrupted when his assistant Jules Fourreau died in 1870. Still unfinished at Jordan's death, the final volume was seen through the press by Camille A. Jordan.
First edition; 3 volumes, folio (39.5 x 30 cm); 501 fine hand-coloured engraved plates by C. Delorme, J. Fourreau, P. Gallaud, and A Mignot, with tissue-guards; remnants of ink-stamp and crossing out to title versos, light spotting to plate 220, but overall plates clean; contemporary black half morocco, marbled sides, spines lettered in gilt, 5 raised bands, marbled endpapers, bindings a little rubbed, an excellent set.
