Laird was a member of the famous shipbuilding family and the Alburkah, built by his yard, was the first iron vessel to make an ocean voyage. The purpose of Laird's expedition was the commercial development of the recent discoveries by the brothers Lander of the River Niger.

First edition. 2 vols, 8vo, map and 6 engraved plates, including frontispieces, light spotting, contemporary maroon half calf, marbled boards, green labels, spines faded, lightly rubbed, a very good set.
