Oliphant had been acting as a correspondent for The Times during this campaign. He had accompanied Lord Stratford to the Crimea from Constantinople. Oliphant had a glimpse of the siege of Sebastopol, afterwards joining the force under Omar Pasha. He was present at the battle of the Ingour. The fall of Kars then made the expedition fruitless, and after much suffering during the retreat, he returned to England.

First edition. 8vo, [ii](ads), xxvii, 234, [16](ads)pp., 5 coloured lithographed plates including frontispiece, 1 folding map, woodcut vignette on title and four others, original green blindstamped cloth gilt, gilt vignette to upper cover, presentation inscription to title, light wear, a very good copy.
