Horace Waller was associated with Livingstone in the 1850s in the Zambezi. After Stanley succeeded in discovering Livingstone, the journals were given to Waller for publication. Waller himself was well-known for his vigorous anti-slavery campaign.

First edition; 2 vols, 8vo (23 x 15 cm); 21 full-page plates including frontispieces, 24 further in-text illustrations, 2 folding colour maps, 1 of which large in rear pocket, armorial bookplates to pastedowns; publisher's original gilt pictorial cloth, gilt lettering to spines, touch of rubbing, spines a little faded, still a near-fine set; xvi, 360, 6 (ads. dated December 1874); viii, 346, 20 (ads. dated November 1874) pp.
