First edition of a scarce account of two journeys through Egypt, the Sinai, the Holy Land, and Syria by George and Emma Lowth. The second journey, in particular, recounts encounters with numerous Sheikhs and Bedouin tribes as they crossed the desert.

Lowth addresses his account to 'the ear of common things': he does not attempt to uncover or reappraise the mysteries of the past, nor to paint a general picture of the present, but rather offers an entertaining and unpretentious account of everyday travelling experience. His tales are invigorated by the simultaneous eye for eclectic detail and absolute moral and aesthetic instinct which characterises the Victorian sensibility.
