LOWTH, George T.
The Wanderer in Arabia; or, Western Footsteps in Eastern Tracks.
London, Hurst and Blackett, 1855.
Lowth addresses his account to 'the ear of common things': he does not attempt to uncover or reappraise the mysteries of the past, nor to paint a general picture of the present, but rather offers an entertaining and unpretentious account of everyday travelling experience. His tales are invigorated by the simultaneous eye for eclectic detail and absolute moral and aesthetic instinct which characterises the Victorian sensibility.
First edition; 2 vols, 8vo (20 x 13 cm); 6 lithograph plates including frontispieces, armorial bookplates to pastedowns, little spotting to plates; publisher's original blind-stamped orange cloth, gilt vignettes to upper boards, gilt lettering to spines, expertly restored, vol 2 with unobtrusive stain to spine, a very good copy; x, 334, 24, 16 (ads.); vii, 372, [2, (ads.)] pp.
