The copy of Lieutenant-General Sir Herbert Fothergill Cooke, a highly decorated commander of the British Army (knighted three separate times) who commanded the 34th Sikh Pioneers during the Battle of the Somme and was made Major General of the Indian Army in 1921.First edition; 8vo (24 x 16.5 cm); 45 plates on 34 sheets including colour frontispiece, 2 folding maps plus map endpapers, ownership inscription to first blank with ephemera loosely inserted; publisher's original red cloth, gilt crests to upper board, gilt lettering to spine, touch of rubbing, a near-fine copy; xvi, 560 pp.
