science education for women
Third edition of this significant work by one of the early promoters of science education for girls. All early editions are rare commercially.Margaret Bryan 'ran a boarding school for girls at Blackheath from 1795 to 1806, opened a school in London in 1815, and moved to Margate in 1816. The curriculum in her schools differed from that of most peer institutions by including mathematics and science as suitable subjects for girls' (Ogilvie, Biographical Dictionary of Women in Science, p. 198). A Compendious System of Astronomy was Bryan's first book, and it earned her the praise of Charles Hutton, Fellow of the Royal Society and professor mathematics at Woolwich Royal Military Academy. This encouraged her to published additional titles, including Lectures on Natural Philosophy (1806) and An Astronomical and Geographical Class Book for Schools (1815).
