Mayer made the illustrations when employed as the personal view painter for Sir Robert Ainslie, British ambassador at Constantinople from 1776-92. The scenes here are quite memorable, not only for the impressive views of ancient monuments, but for their glimpses in to the lives and culture of the people.
First editions; 2 works in 1, folio (47 x 34 cm); in total 48 coloured aquatint plates, tissue guards, armorial bookplate to front free endpaper, occasional marginal finger mark; twentieth-century quarter red morocco, purple cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine in six compartments, a very good copy; [ii], 47, [1]; [iv], 40 pp.
