A handsome two-volume variorum edition of Milton's (1608-1674) epic poem Paradise Lost, 'one of the greatest works of human imagination' retelling in blank-verse the story of the Fall of Man. With a critical biography of the author by Thomas Newton (1704-1782), the bishop of Bristol and a keen Miltonist, and illustrations after the Royal Academician Francis Hayman (1708-1776).
Eighth Newton edition, 2 vols; 8vo (21.5 x 14 cm); 14 engraved plates including portrait frontispieces, ownership inscription in pen to title header of each vol., including Thomas Newton's 'The Life of Milton' and an extensive index, minor spotting; contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt spine, contrasting red and green title-pieces, edges stained yellow, minor wear to extremities; [24], lxxxvi, [26], 510; 463, [183]pp.
