the author's masterpiece
The first edition in English of the author's masterpiece, seldom found in such presentable condition.Kazantzakis began the Odyssey in Heraklion in 1925, and completed it on Aegina in 1938. In the intervening years he worked constantly on the initial version, incorporating images and impressions from every new journey he made. Before full publication in 1938, excerpts from the Odyssey had appeared in various Greek literary magazines between 1926 and 1938.
Considered by him to be his most important work, Kazantzakis' Odyssey is an ambitious sequel to Homer's Odyssey and one of the 'very first monuments of European Modernism' (Gonzáles-Vaquerizo, p. 104). he 'modern sequel' begins from where Homer's Odyssey leaves off, following the Odysseus after his return to Ithaca: restless in domestic life and driven by an insatiable desire for freedom, he embarks on a series of new journeys culminating in his arrival in Antarctica.
