LARKIN, Philip.

The North Ship.
Stock Code 124506
London, The Fortune Press, 1945 [but 1965].
pirated edition - signed by the author
Signed by the author on the front free endpaper: 'Philip Larkin / (unauthorised reprint!)'.This pirated edition, limited to 500 copies, was issued in advance of the authorised Faber & Faber release, but was swiftly withdrawn when Larkin discovered its existence. By 1972, according to Bloomfield, the publisher still had 220 copies in stock, but these had no dustjackets, which 'had inadvertently been destroyed.'
Second (unauthorised) edition, one of 500 copies, this copy signed by the author; 8vo; publisher's russet buckram (some copies bound in maroon buckram; no known priority), titles to spine gilt, spine cocked, with the unclipped dustjacked, priced 21s on front flap; a very good copy in the slightly toned dustjacket with minor creasing to extremities.
Bloomfield A1(b).
