Stephensen's biting political satire, in which he mocks the Conservative politician Sir William Joynson-Hicks, who was well-known for his authoritarianism, his campaigns against Communism, and his attempted suppression of what he saw as the indecent literature of the roaring twenties, including Radclyffe Hall's lesbian novel, The Well of Loneliness (1928).Edition de luxe, number 395 of 500 copies on Japon vellum; 4to; 7 full-page black and white illustrations by Beresford Egan, minor spotting and offsetting to endpapers, ink stain to rear free endpaper, else unmarked internally; publisher's cream paper covered boards, pictorial vignette and title to upper board in blue, boards slightly toned and marked, original glassine wrapper, loss at head and foot; overall very good.
